Our take: most ChatGPT Pro $200 subscribers should stay put through October, spend the one-time $2,500 credit, and only then decide. The change to ChatGPT Pro usage limits is real: from October 30, 2026, Pro 200 drops from 20 times the Plus allowance to 10 times, for the same $200 a month. But the new $500 plan does not give you more usage per dollar. It mainly sells speed. Below are the numbers, a simple way to work out which plan fits, and the dates to put in your calendar.
What changes to ChatGPT Pro usage limits on October 30?
OpenAI announced the change at DevDay on September 29, 2026. According to The Next Web's report from the event, Pro 200's allowance for ChatGPT Work and Codex falls from 20x to 10x the Plus allowance, and weekly GPT-6 Pro messages fall from 200 to 100. Existing subscribers keep the old limits through October 29.
At the same event, OpenAI launched Pro 500. OpenAI's DevDay recap calls it "our highest usage allowance at 25 times the ChatGPT Plus allowance," and it is the only personal plan with Ultrafast, a speed setting that OpenAI says generates tokens "up to 8× faster (300 tokens per second) in Codex and up to 6x in the API." Ultrafast is also on Enterprise plans.
Current Pro 200 subscribers also get a one-time $2,500 usage credit (reported as 62,500 credits) that expires December 31, 2026.
One more detail from OpenAI's help center: on September 10 it paused new sign-ups and upgrades to the old "Pro 20X" version of the $200 plan. In other words, the 20x deal was already closed to new customers before DevDay.
The math: every Pro plan now costs the same per unit of usage
The easiest way to compare plans is to divide the monthly price by the usage multiple OpenAI quotes. Plus is $20 for 1x, so it works out to $20 per "1x" of usage. Here is every plan on the same scale:
| Plan | Price per month | Usage vs Plus | Cost per 1x |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plus | $20 | 1x | $20 |
| Pro 100 | $100 | 5x | $20 |
| Pro 200 (through Oct 29) | $200 | 20x | $10 |
| Pro 200 (from Oct 30) | $200 | 10x | $20 |
| Pro 500 | $500 | 25x | $20 |
So the October 30 change does not make Pro 200 a bad deal compared with the other plans. It removes a discount. Pro 200 used to give you usage at half price. From October 30, every tier costs about $20 per unit, and you are simply choosing how many units you need. Prices outside the U.S. are set locally, so the ratios can differ.
The Ultrafast catch
Ultrafast is the main reason to pay $500, and it is easy to misread. Faster tokens also use up your allowance faster. eesel AI's analysis of the plan puts the burn rate at 8x in Ultrafast mode. On that estimate, a Pro 500 allowance spent entirely on Ultrafast would cover roughly 3x Plus worth of work, which is less than Pro 200 gives you even after the cut.
That makes Ultrafast a time-for-money trade. It pays off when waiting on Codex is what slows you down, for example running many short agent loops during a working day. It does not pay off if you mainly need more volume.
Which plan should you be on?
Start with one question: how much of your weekly allowance did you actually use? Look at the usage information in your ChatGPT and Codex settings for a normal week, not a deadline week.
- You used under half: the new 10x limit covers you. Stay on Pro 200, or try Pro 100 (5x) if you used under a quarter. That saves $100 a month.
- You regularly hit the cap in Codex or long agent runs: use the $2,500 credit through November and December, measure your real usage under the new limits, then decide in late December whether Pro 500 is worth $300 more a month.
- Speed is your real problem: Pro 500 is the only personal plan with Ultrafast. Work out whether the hours you save each month are worth $300 to you.
- You mostly chat, write and research: OpenAI says its new GPT-6.1 Sol model is available on Plus as well as Pro. If you rarely touch GPT-6 Pro or Codex, the $20 Plus plan may be enough.
Dates to put in your calendar
- October 29, 2026: last day of the 20x Pro 200 allowance for existing subscribers.
- October 30, 2026: the 10x limit and 100 GPT-6 Pro messages a week apply.
- Your next billing date after October 30: a sensible moment to review your plan, because by then you will have worked under the new limits for a while.
- December 31, 2026: the $2,500 credit expires. Unused credit is lost.

ChatGPT Pro plan questions
Are ChatGPT Pro usage limits going down?
The price stays at $200 a month, but you get half the usage from October 30, 2026: 10x the Plus allowance instead of 20x, and 100 GPT-6 Pro messages a week instead of 200. Per unit of usage, that is the same rate as the other Pro plans.
What do you get with ChatGPT Pro 500?
Pro 500 costs $500 a month and offers 25 times the Plus allowance, the highest of any personal plan. It is also the only personal plan with Ultrafast, which OpenAI says generates tokens up to 8 times faster in Codex.
Do existing Pro subscribers get anything for the change?
Yes. Current Pro 200 subscribers keep the 20x allowance through October 29, 2026, and get a one-time usage credit worth $2,500 that expires on December 31, 2026.
Is there a cheaper ChatGPT Pro plan?
Yes. OpenAI's help center lists a Pro $100 plan with 5 times the Plus allowance. At $20 per unit of usage, it costs the same per unit as Plus, Pro 200 after the change, and Pro 500.
Can I still get the old 20x Pro plan?
No. OpenAI paused new sign-ups and upgrades to the 20x version on September 10, 2026, and existing subscribers move to 10x on October 30.
How we put this together
We used OpenAI's DevDay 2026 recap and help center pages, and filled in the Pro 200 details that OpenAI's recap does not spell out from The Next Web's DevDay report and eesel AI's plan breakdown. The cost-per-unit figures are our own calculation from US list prices. Usage multiples are OpenAI's and can vary by model and task.
