SaaS News Today, Oct 8: Rovo Work, Nous $1.5B, VMware

Last checked October 8, 2026 · News roundup

What moved in business software: Atlassian and Cisco both rebuilt their collaboration tools around AI agents, while Nous Research raised $90 million at a $1.5 billion valuation to sell its open-source Hermes agent to companies. A new survey says nine in ten VMware customers are weighing alternatives, and ICANN's first new-domain round in years shows OpenAI, Meta and eight others chasing .agent.

SaaS news today covers announcements from October 6–7, 2026 and focuses on what changes for US teams that pay for these tools, plus the funding and legal moves worth knowing about.

Atlassian Rovo Work: Jira and Confluence agents that run multi-step jobs

At Team '26 Europe on October 7, 2026, Atlassian announced Rovo Work, a new mode inside Rovo Chat for long, multi-step tasks. You set the goal, review Rovo's proposed plan, and approve the result; in between, the agent can work for hours and even look up how to do a task it wasn't trained on, according to SiliconANGLE.

Underneath sits a new Agentic Multiplayer Protocol (AMP). Every agent gets an identity assigned by an admin, with a defined authority and scope, so humans and agents can edit the same Confluence page or Jira issue with clear permissions. Atlassian also announced Rovo Code Search, which pulls source code into its Teamwork Graph, and Data Context, which connects agents to Databricks, Snowflake and BigQuery. Its MCP server now exposes 200 tools and handles about 15 million tool calls a day.

Who it affects: Jira, Confluence and Loom customers on Rovo. Atlassian did not publish pricing or a general-availability date in the coverage we reviewed. What to do: admins should map which teams may give agents write access before turning Rovo Work on. This follows the Jira-in-ChatGPT deal we covered in yesterday's SaaS roundup.

Webex AI agents: Claude and OpenAI's Dots come to Cisco Webex

Cisco used WebexOne in Austin on October 7, 2026 to show a redesigned Webex with agents that join spaces, meetings and calls to take notes, translate, schedule and finish tasks. It plans to bring Anthropic's Claude into Webex through Claude Managed Agents, and a Model Context Protocol link will feed Webex data into OpenAI's Dots agents, with Dots later available inside Webex as a personal agent.

Other additions include personal agents that answer calls when you're busy and judge urgency, and an AI coach in the Vidcast recorder that critiques pacing and filler words. For contact centers, a new layer called Dialog lets agents keep context across channels and keep working on a request after the call ends; beta is planned for the first quarter of 2027.

Timing: SiliconANGLE reports most of the new features and products are planned for early 2027, and pricing was not announced. What to do: if your Webex renewal is due before then, don't pay extra now for AI features that haven't shipped.

Nous Research valuation hits $1.5B: what Hermes for Businesses is

Nous Research, maker of the open-source Hermes Agent, confirmed a $90 million Series B at a $1.5 billion valuation on October 7, 2026. Robot Ventures led the round, with Nvidia, Samsung, Union Square Ventures, Menlo Ventures and 1789 Capital participating, according to TechCrunch. Total funding is now $158 million.

Hermes runs as a desktop agent that can work with your files, browse the web and run code in a container, routing each prompt to the model best suited to it, Claude included. Nous says Hermes has been cloned more than 24 million times and drives about 2.5% of global AI token usage by its own estimate. The new money funds Hermes for Businesses, which lets companies deploy custom agents for multi-step workflows while keeping data private. The Wall Street Journal reported Nous was at about $36 million in annualized revenue in mid-September and expects to pass $100 million by year-end.

What to do: teams already testing Hermes on laptops should check how the business edition handles data retention before rolling it out wider.

Why 9 in 10 VMware customers are looking for alternatives

A survey published October 7, 2026 found nine in ten VMware customers say higher licensing costs are pushing them to consider other options. Unisphere Research polled 269 executives and IT staff at VMware user organizations between December 2025 and February 2026. Note the sponsor: the study was commissioned by Rimini Street, which sells third-party VMware support.

The details: 73% call cost savings a top priority, 60% are considering running more than one hypervisor, 54% cite the end of perpetual license support, and 48% have no plans to move any workloads to VMware Cloud Foundation, the subscription platform Broadcom prefers. Separately, The Register notes Gartner expects 55% of enterprises to start proofs of concept for VMware alternatives by 2029.

What to do: start a migration cost estimate at least a year before your renewal date; switching hypervisors takes skills and testing time. For other price hikes hitting software budgets this fall, see our October 2026 SaaS pricing changes tracker.

.agent domain: who applied, and when you might register one

ICANN published the 1,615 applications filed so far in its first new top-level domain round in years, from 481 applicants. AI dominates: ten companies, including Meta and OpenAI, applied for .agent; seven for .agi; six for .asi; and four for .intelligence, according to The Verge's October 7, 2026 report. OpenAI applied for 15 domains in total and Meta for 21.

About 345 are brand domains a company would keep for itself, such as .zoom, .zillow, .chatgpt, .codex and .threads; Anthropic applied for .anthropic and .claude. The Verge notes this is only one step in the process, and nothing becomes official before sometime next year.

What it means for you: you can't register a .agent name today. If you run an AI product, watch for a public launch period next year, and secure your brand on the existing .ai or .com first.

Today's AI startup funding: Mecka, Stuut, Healthleap and Tab

Four more rounds landed on October 6–7, 2026, beyond Nous Research:

  • Mecka AI, $60 million Series B. Sequoia led, with Nvidia and Microsoft's M12. Mecka pays people to record everyday tasks while wearing sensors, then sells the motion data to train robots.
  • Stuut, $52.5 million Series B. Insight Partners led, with Andreessen Horowitz and M12; total raised is $93 million. Its agents chase unpaid invoices and fix order-to-cash errors for finance teams.
  • Healthleap, $38 million seed and Series A. An $8 million seed co-led by Sequoia and First Round, plus a $30 million Series A led by Hummingbird Ventures. Its software scans hospital records for missed conditions such as malnutrition and is used in more than 50 hospitals.
  • Tab, $300 million valuation. The personal assistant you text over iMessage or WhatsApp came out of stealth; round size was not disclosed. Investors include SV Angel and Valar Ventures.

The pattern for buyers: finance automation and agent-style assistants are where investors are spending, so expect more vendors pitching both to your team this quarter.

TP-Link lawsuit: four states sue the router maker

The attorneys general of Florida, Iowa, Montana and Nebraska have sued TP-Link Systems, The Register reported on October 7, 2026. The complaint says the company's security marketing, such as claims that HomeShield "covers all security scenarios," was misleading because its routers had critical vulnerabilities, and that it hid how much it still depends on Chinese suppliers. TP-Link rejects the allegations.

This matters for small offices: Circana data cited in the report puts TP-Link at about 36.6% of US consumer router unit sales in 2024. According to Ars Technica, the suits were filed on October 6, about six months after the FCC banned new consumer routers made wholly or partly abroad unless exempted. TP-Link has no exemption yet, so it can't sell its latest Wi-Fi 8 routers in the US, though models approved before the ban are still on sale.

What to do: if your office runs on a TP-Link router, update its firmware now, change the default admin password and turn off remote management. Make the router part of your next hardware refresh review.

Questions about today's SaaS news

Is Atlassian Rovo Work free?

Atlassian has not published pricing for Rovo Work. It is a new mode inside Rovo Chat, announced at Team '26 Europe on October 7, 2026. Check your Atlassian admin console and plan page before assuming it's included in your current Jira or Confluence subscription.

Can I buy a .agent domain yet?

No. Ten companies, including Meta and OpenAI, have only applied to ICANN to run .agent. The application is only one step, and nothing is expected to become official before sometime in 2027, so no registrar can sell you a .agent name today.

Is VMware getting more expensive?

Many customers say so. In a Rimini Street-commissioned survey of 269 VMware users, nine in ten said higher licensing costs push them to consider alternatives, and 54% cited the end of perpetual license support. Your actual price depends on your Broadcom contract and core count.
